Leaky Roof? We've Got You Covered

Leaky Roof? We've Got You CoveredEach year homeowners are spending thousands of dollars to care for their homes.

A leaky roof can be a real downer, especially when there are big numbers at stake.

What is one of the leading causes or roof related costs? Maybe you guessed it, a leaky roof. Often times people are unaware that they have a leak.

It is not until they see a small brown spot starting to form on their drywall on their ceiling or wall that they become curious as to what might be going on.

Obviously most will then venture into their attic or call a professional. But what then?

What people often don't understand is that water can actually leak below the surface of many types of roofing materials.

The water then runs down hill and may find a spot to leak through sub roofing materials. That means it is not always obvious whether or not the leak is directly above the area of concern.

A Roofing Professional: Doorway to a sound mind.

Having a professional roofer come out and take a look at what is going on is usually the best option. The reason why is because the trained professional will be able to look and clearly see what needs to be remedied.

Left unchecked leaky roofs can lead to mold and other problems. Dry rot causes a softening in the wood's integrity and is a wood destroying organism that will most likely have to be replaced if it is found during an inspection before the house can be sold.

Depending on the type of roof that you have, the attic area will need to "breathe" appropriately. It is always advisable to make sure that there is no impedance in the air flow in the areas that need to be ventilated.  This includes excessive insulation.

Some things that might help you determine whether not you need to have a roofer check out your issue is whether or not there are areas such as skylights involved. These are notorious for leaks and often can be remedied externally by purchasing and applying roof patch material from your local hardware store.

Additional Sound Roofing Tips

At this point you might be asking yourself what other things you can you do in order to maintain a healthy roof?

We recommend that you make sure that no trees are touching your home as it is a pathway to invite insects. We also encourage you not to have trees that shed lots of leaves on the roof. This can clog gutters and cause unnecessary wear patterns due to the way the waters flowing off of the house.

Finally we suggest that you get routine checks of the roof each year. Make sure that everything is secure and safe and that nothing such as shingles or tiles will blow off in the event of a storm.

We hope that you have found the material helpful and wish you Happy Holidays from the Roofing People.
